Safer Gloucester Partnership hosted “Gloucester Youth’s Got Talent” at the Gloucester Guildhall on Friday November 5th 2010 where contestants competed for an iPod touch, five hours in a recording studio and a camcorder. All of the finalists were given a £10 music voucher.
The auditions were held in October and the judges were blown away by the talent. With great difficulty they chose sixteen acts for the final and what a show it turned out to be! There were soloists, bands and dancers, but the final was won by singing ventriloquist Kieran Powell. Second was Jessica Weaver who sang “Wishing you were somehow here again” from Phantom of the Opera and in third place was William Babarinsa who played keyboard, sang and danced.
The standard of performance from each and every finalist was excellent and the brilliant Increase the peace performed whilst the judges made their tough decisions before returning to make the announcements. Overall, the show proved that Gloucester’s Youth really do have talent.

Safer Gloucester had even managed to secure some elite judges for the final – Mary-Jess Leaverland, winner of the Chinese X Factor 2009, Joe Lemer, breakfast presenter from Total Star radio and Media Lecturer at Gloucestershire College, Dread MC, a leading MC on the underground circuit in the South West, Joe Schiavon, programming and marketing manager at the Gloucester Guildhall who runs his own record label and management company, Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Chief Inspector Richard Burge and Jane Morris from Tesco, the main contest sponsor.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the harm caused by substance misuse. Everyone who auditioned was given a “goody” bag that included information about the harm caused by smoking, drugs and alcohol and where they could get help in Gloucester if they, or someone they knew needed help.
The first half started with a presentation about substance misuse locally and nationally and the second half started with a DVD interview of local ex drug user Delroy Ellis who had turned his life around and now works with young people and promotes positive lifestyles.
