Stay Safe This Christmas 2011

20/Dec/2011

Stay Safe This Christmas 2011 Safer Gloucester has devised special Christmas cards offering advice to residents who are preparing for the festivities.

Local policing teams in the city will be delivering the cards to homes this week.

They include guidance not to put presents under the tree until the very last minute in case they attract an opportunist burglar and reminders to leave lights on at home when out, not to carry too much cash when shopping and to take care when out celebrating the festive season.

Chief Inspector Richard Burge, Chair of the Safer Gloucester Crime Reduction Action Group, said: “We want people to be able to enjoy the Christmas period and not to become victims of crime and so it is very timely that we have produced these Christmas cards to deliver to local residents. They offer great advice on how to stay safe in your home, out shopping and going out for Christmas parties and celebrations.

"Apart from hiding your presents from public view, both at home and in the car, it is important to remember that if you are not going to be home before it gets dark or you are going out in the evening please take some time to make it look like someone is at home.

"Make sure you leave a light on in the house, keep the curtains closed and try to leave a radio on. By taking these few simple steps you are much less likely to be targeted by burglars. If you are going out to Christmas parties, make sure that any taxi you use has a licence plate on the rear of the taxi and that the driver has an identity badge.

"It is always preferable to pre book your taxi but it is not always possible to do this so take care when getting into any vehicle – and don’t drink and drive!”

Councillor Kathy Williams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods at Gloucester City Council said: “Safer Gloucester has worked hard throughout the year to make Gloucester as safe as possible. It is important to us that our residents are safe and feel safe when they are at home and when they are out enjoying themselves. Often by taking the recommended steps, we can ensure that everyone can have a great time this Christmas.”
